3 Apps to Keep You Healthy and Happy!

Updated: Mar 1, 2019

There are so many phone apps out there that promise to help you step up your health and wellness game. While some do, some are way too complicated (or expensive) to work with - trust me, I’ve tried. Luckily, I have a found three that DO work and have helped to keep me on track in my journey towards a healthy mind, body, and spirit. I am excited to share this in hopes of helping YOU discover new (free!) apps that may make staying healthy and happy a little easier.

I dropped my gym membership last summer to save money and encourage myself to do more outdoor workouts. And while this was a pretty successful venture, I quickly realized an app could help for when I do quick home workouts. I love doing High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts or even just quickly timed interval training at home. I have found that using a timer makes this process way smoother. I pick my total time, how many different exercises I will be doing, how long each exercise should last, and the time in-between each exercise and set. This may sound complicated but I have tried similar apps and found Seconds is the most user friendly, plus it has everything I need. Once I set it I don’t have to worry about it for the rest of my workout, I can just crank my tunes and go!

I never thought I would be someone who relied so heavily on meditation. Even though I valued activities that made me slow down – yoga, baths, reading – those activities still felt like I was accomplishing SOMETHING. Going through a 200 hour yoga teacher training changed all of that thinking; specifically when we were challenged to meditate for 30 days in a row. Once I finally got into a groove I started to rely on my few (or more!) minutes every morning. This is where the Insight Timer comes in! On this app you can pick music, guided meditations, nature sounds or anything in-between. The guided meditations are really helpful, especially when you are just starting to meditate, to give you a place to start focusing, or to help you get to sleep! And they range anywhere from a few minutes to hours with lots of different styles. It really feels like there is something for everyone.

This app helps to keep me on track in hitting the daily dozen plant based food servings I need in a day. It is not about calorie counting or meal planning, just a simple way to literally check the boxes in getting enough nutrients. The food options and servings come from Dr. Greger, the author of How Not to Die. You can find tons of information about nutrition and health on his website, nutirtionfacts.org. Seriously, check this website out, it is packed with helpful information! The app provides suggestions for each category of food, serving size, and is really user friendly. An unexpected perk I have found is how it helps to guide me throughout the day. For example, mid-afternoon if I want a snack I’ll look at the app to see what food group my body could use more of!

Well beautiful people, I hope those are helpful suggestions! If any of you use these apps already or have other favorites let me know. And of course, if you have any questions on the ones I mentioned I would love to chat about them!
